Projects: Spartan Mid-ship Cleat/Chock
Every proper vessel has mid-ship cleats. They're a pricey item, but well worth the investment. These cleats, manufactured by Spartan Marine, are durable and have been especially useful for securing Ariel during windy fall weather.
I installed these cleats by carefully chiseling out the toerail, then set the cleats in polysulfide and secured them in place with 1/4" machine screws thru-bolted through the hull to deck joint and backed with fender washers and locknuts. It would have been preferable to back the cleats/chocks with either a stainless or fiberglass plate, but the bolts are located so close to the turn of the hull that it would be very difficult, if not impossible. The installation has held up well, weathering significant loads during periods of high surge in our marina.
