Equipment: Ground Tackle, Sails, Electronics

Ariel came to us moderately equipped, the demands of sailing on Cayuga Lake minimal. She had an older Apelco radar unit, the scanner mounted on an obtrusive stainless steel tower rising up from the transom. Opposite the radar unit, a large Loran whip antenna, fiberglass splinters and all, was mounted on the stern pulpit. A suitable VHF radio and a Jensen stereo were mounted in the nav station. There was no autopilot or GPS. The only automatic bilge pump was located in the shower sump. The alternator was the only mode of charging batteries.

We filled the first winter as Ariel's owners with buying, buying, and more buying. We made several trips to the local marine store, and placed order after order with online suppliers. A trip to Chicago for our first Strictly Sail boat show resulted in GPS and a few other goodies. We pored over marine catalogs, and before long we'd added an autopilot, a new JRC radar unit and mast mount, binoculars, datascope, Pioneer CD player, handheld VHF, battery charger, anchor, docklines.

And the list continues to grow.
