Jake and Jon Westfall were my students during my first year of teaching. We've kept in touch since their graduation, and I've spent some time introducing them to sailing - first, on my Chrysler 20, and later on Ariel. When I came across an ad on the Cape Dory Board for a Typhoon in Sandusky, Ohio, I tried to convince my wife that we needed to buy it. Well, she wouldn't buy it! So, I told the boys about it and before too long we were in the car heading for Sandusky one weekend morning. At the end of the day, we headed back to Michigan owning the Typhoon, a West Marine inflatable, and an Evinrude 4hp outboard, all for the grand total of 1300.00. Incredible! Essentiallly the boys walked away with a Typhoon for less than a thousand dollars - and one in relatively good condition, too.
This photo is of the boys (Jon, bow; Jake, stern) at our marina where they tied up for a bit after a hard day sailing. The Typhoon is an incredible little boat. She really sails like a proper yacht - a bit wet when the waves are up, but she's stable.
